Maytag Washer Code F9E1 [How To Solve]
I saw this Maytag washer code F9 E1 on my MHW4200BWO model. Every once in a while, I could get SUD errors. Cleaning the trap and discharge pipe was the first thing we did to clear the EO1 and FO9 on a Maytag washer.
The errors have now been happening frequently after every wash cycle. The good news is that this is a drain pump issue, and you can solve it. I ran a diagnostic test to check different parts such as the impeller, drain hose, and drain pump to figure out the problem.
To cut a long story short, I replaced the drain pump, and my Maytag washer was up and running. Today, I want to reveal step-by-step instructions on how you can do this diagnostic test to fix the problem on your Maytag washer.
And the best part?
I will be super detailed in my diagnostic analysis and tests so that you won’t need a technician to help you clear Maytag washer code F9E1. Before we go any further, let’s find out what this error means.
What Do E01 and F09 Mean on Maytag Washer?
The F9E1 error code on the Maytag washer means the drum takes too long to drain water. It’s referred to as the long drain and draining system.
Several reasons can make a Maytag washer experience a long drain, such as a kinked drain hose, clogged lint screen, rogue articles of clothes stuck in the drain pump, or a broken lid switch.Â
Whatever the cause, you’ll have to ensure the Maytag drains water well before you can use it. Before we start diagnosing each of these parts independently, you’ll have to perform a master reset.
Here’s why:
To know if you have a severe problem or false alarm. Sometimes your Maytag washer may have a little malfunction that can be solved quickly by performing a master reset.
Here’s how it goes:
- Unplug the Maytag washer from the socket
- Wait for 10 minutes
- Plug the washer into the socket and start a small cycle.
If it’s a false alarm, the washer will work as usual. Maytag washer code F9E1 will likely return if it’s a severe issue. At this point, you can proceed to the next step and diagnose each part to see where the problem lies.

Correct the Drain Hose Position

The drain hose has to be more than 31 inches above the floor. In other words, it should be raised but not higher than 8 feet.
Why do I say this?
It will eliminate the possibility of siphoning. Another measure you can ensure is in the best drainage range is to ensure that the washer drain hose has an outside diameter of 114 inches.Â
The drain pump must be thirty inches high to ensure no water is siphoned. You may also want to build a standpipe. You’ll have to install a P-trap into that pipe.
You’ll want a two-inch diameter pipe going straight up 18” to 42” long from the P-trap. Then you’ll have to put the washer drain into the top of the standpipe as described in the picture. A wrong drain hose position could make the Maytag washer fail to fill and experience drainage issues.
Free the Drain Hose From Clogs
While correcting the drain hose ensures that it has no clogs. The drain hose connects the drain pump to a standpipe. If the Maytag washer can’t drain an object well, dirt or debris is stuck in the drain hose.
The easiest way to check this is by blowing air through the drain hose. You’ll face obstruction if you have an object blocking the drain hose. If the hose is kinked or worn, you’ll have to replace it to improve the ability of the Maytag washer to pump water.
One of the easiest ways to prevent drain hose blockage is to install a lint catcher at the mouth of the hose. Link catchers fit inside the opening of most Maytag washers’ hoses.
Once inserted, they catch lint that comes out of the washer’s drum with their rust-proof stainless steel coils. The lint catcher is easy to remove, and they come in large packs. If you don’t want to use a link catcher, you can always clean your water hose thoroughly.
Once you have diagnosed and fixed the issues with the drain hose, you’ll have to reset the Maytag washer to clear the error. Here’s how it goes:
- Unplug the Maytag washer from the electrical socket
- Wait for ten minutes
- Plug the washer back and start a small cycle without the clothes.
If you did everything well as I have described, you wouldn’t see the Maytag washer error code F9E1. However, if you see it, the problem lies with the drain pump. If you have a new washer, check if the drain pump is covered in the warranty.
Checking the Drain Pump
The drain pump is near the filter, and it removes water from the washer after cleaning. The pump forces water from the washer to the drain hose. If the pump is in excellent shape, you won’t be experiencing Maytag washer error code F9E1.
If you have a clogged pump, you’ll have to clean it thoroughly. Since the Maytag washer is an electrical appliance, you’ll have to switch it off to avoid electrocution.
Remember to place the Maytag washer socket on the machine’s tip so that it doesn’t come in contact with water that may spill on it. You’ll need a screwdriver to open the back access of the machine. Now that you open the back access, you’ll see the drain hose and pump. The drain pump is the largest one. The clasp is what attaches the hose to the pump.
If the drain pump is blocked, you’ll have to use a drain snake to unblock the pump. If you don’t want to use the drain snake, you can use a high-quality cleaning solution like this one (Xion lab industrial-strength drain opener liquid). The solution works like a treat on clogged drains of any kind.
It’s eco-friendly, which means you won’t have to worry about it rusting the drain pump of your Maytag washer. The solution will need at least 6 to 8 hours to take effect. However, expect the drain pump to be cleaner than when using a drain auger or snake. After waiting for six to eight hours, you’ll have to flush the drain pump with hot water, and your job will be done.
Test the Drain Pump Resistance
If you are still getting the error after a thorough cleaning, you’ll have to test the drain pump for resistance. But that’s not all; you’ll also check the wire connectors going to the control board from the drain pump.
The reading on the multimeter should be 5 to 10 ohms. If the reading is zero or infinite, you’ll have to replace the drain pump.
You shouldn’t also have Maytag washer error code F9E1 if the control board connector and the drain pump connectors are working okay.
